Abstract

The article aims to identify effective psychological strategies for preventing and overcoming professional burnout among students and early-career professionals in the field of physical rehabilitation. Materials and methods included an analysis of contemporary scientific publications and practice-oriented sources addressing burnout in physical therapists and students, as well as a theoretical synthesis and systematization of risk factors and evidence-based coping strategies. Empirical and review studies on burnout in physical therapy and in educational and professional training contexts were examined, enabling the identification of key groups of risk and protective factors.

The findings indicate that senior students and young professionals are particularly vulnerable to burnout due to a combination of excessive academic and occupational workload, the emotional demands of a helping profession, perfectionistic attitudes, and limited experience and support at the early stages of their careers. The initial phase of professional development is shown to heighten sensitivity to stressors, thereby increasing the risk of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization.

Evidence suggests that active, problem-focused coping strategies—such as planning, solution seeking, help-seeking, and the use of social support—are most effective in preventing and reducing burnout, in contrast to passive or avoidant strategies such as procrastination and problem denial. The practical significance of students’ educational and organizational skills, including rational time management, early exam preparation, and proactive engagement with academic support resources, is emphasized as a means of reducing stress and the risk of exhaustion.

Additionally, the protective role of physical activity, a balanced daily routine, relaxation skills, resilience development, and a more constructive cognitive style is highlighted. Together, these factors enhance stress tolerance and support the restoration of psychological resources. The results may be valuable for higher education institutions and employers in the rehabilitation sector when designing support systems, mentoring initiatives, and burnout prevention programs for students and early-career specialists.
