PSYCHOLOGICAL COMPETENCE OF A MODERN TEACHER: CONCEPT AND STRUCTURE

Abstract

The article is devoted to defining the content of the definition of «psychological competence» in modern psychological science. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the content of the concept of «psychological competence» in the professional activity of a teacher. In particular, the author analyses the professional standard for the profession of educator in order to determine the content of psychological competence as one of the important components of his/her professionalism. The content of psychological competence of a modern teacher is defined. An attempt has been made to identify the main structural components of the educator's psychological competence, and a detailed analysis of each of them has been carried out.

The results of an empirical study of the level of psychological competence of modern educators are presented. In particular, it was determined that about 40% of teachers believe that their level of psychological knowledge is low; the majority of the surveyed teachers said that it is difficult for them to assess the mental state of a child by his or her behavioural manifestations; one third of teachers admitted that the educational process does not use an individual approach according to the individual psychological characteristics of students. According to the study, only a quarter of teachers have a high level of communication and organisational skills, but they are ready for self-development and self-discovery.  

The article identifies the main patterns and problems of development and formation of teachers' psychological competence. The structural model of cooperation between a practical psychologist of an educational institution and a teaching staff with the aim of raising the level of psychological education and culture of teachers as participants in the educational process is proposed. The analysis of the main functions of the psychological service of the educational sector to improve the psychological competence of teachers is carried out.
